1/20/2021 0 Comments Skincare 101Navigating the world of skincare can be a daunting one, am I right? We have an unending parade of choices available to us. We can shop online, at Sephora and even our local grocery stores for skincare. We can choose between clean beauty, influencer finds and celebrity skincare lines (the most recent fad, despite being less than qualified to give skincare advice) #sorrynotsorry. So how do you build an effective skincare routine that will work? Let me break it down. 1. Don’t play the guessing game. The men and women I meet and treat come to me with various skin concerns and goals but they have one thing in common: they are unsure of how to tackle them. More often than not, my clients are inundated with the sheer volume of choices out there and I don’t blame them! Every skincare brand and every “skincare professional” is touting perfect skin with overnight results so it’s natural to want to buy and try it all. But here’s the problem, all this guesswork is costing you hard-earned dollars and a lot of effort, with sometimes 0 payoff. Many of my clients have felt almost cheated that they spent hundreds if not thousands on skincare, only to be left disappointed. This is why it is SO important to consult with a professional who has studied and works with the skin. It’s only our largest organ of our body and a complex interconnected system after all ;) If you have questions about your skin and really want to understand how to preserve it for a lifetime, stop the guessing games and work with a professional who can genuinely guide you. 2. Ask yourself: What are your skin concerns and goals? What do you want to tackle and what are looking to achieve with your skincare? Is it to restore clarity to your complexion and achieve an even tone? Do you want to preserve your youthfulness and maintain the overall health of your skin? Whatever it might be, you need to have some immediate and long-term goals in mind so that you can invest in the pieces that serve you. Curating a skincare routine that’s appropriate for you heavily depends on understanding the above and this information helps your skincare professional in making accurate recommendations. The end goal: correct skin concerns and get the coveted, healthy glow you deserve. 3. Build the foundations of skincare first. What good is having the ultimate anti-aging serum collection when you don’t even own sunscreen? It doesn’t make sense! When you start from scratch, you have to build the foundational pieces of skincare upon which healthy skin is sustained. They are: These are the bare bones of every routine. To expand on this, I would go further in saying that there are 6 essential skincare items that maintain healthy, vibrant skin for life. They are: For anyone looking to maintain their already healthy skin, this is really all you need. Everything else from here should be built in for correction purposes by targeting a specific skin concern or to compliment this existing routine.
4. Be consistent and trust the process It sounds cliché but it’s true! There are no overnight miracles with skincare. Results come from spending the time and effort in using a routine as directed. Some medical grade products will produce immediate changes, namely textural and tonal, but it’s the long-term results that are far more important and it takes at least 4-6 weeks of consistent use to notice real change. Working with effective formulas may also mean fluctuations in your skin that you are not accustomed to and that’s not your signal to jump ship. Sometimes you have to push past any discomfort to receive the true lasting benefits. Once again, working with a qualified skin specialist can help guide you as you learn to trust the process. 5. Make tweaks when necessary. If your routine is working well for you and you continue to see consistent results, then by all means stick with it. However, it’s unrealistic to expect that our skin will remain the same through our lifetime or even through the seasons. This is where tweaking your routine is necessary. Don’t forget that your skin is an ever-changing organ that reflects the state of our internal/external environment. Any adjustments to your routine should be made to treat the current state of your skin and to help progress it to the next level in reaching your skin goals. Skincare is the nourishment that your skin requires to thrive. It doesn’t have to be complicated but it should suit your needs, goals and fit your lifestyle.
